"Barcelona announces record tourist figures to end 2010," headlinesEl Periódico. According to the Barcelona daily, with more than seven million visitors, the Catalan capital has "reported a record year for its tourist business" — a result which has coincided with the inauguration of the high-speed rail link between Figueres (Spain) and Perpignan (France). Delighted by the figures, El Periódico remarks that Barcelona benefits from "a price-quality ratio" unrivalled by other European capitals. [The newspaper argues](http:// http://www.elperiodico.com/es/noticias/opinion/20101220/barcelona-supera/631013.shtml) in favour of imposing a tax on tourists visiting the city, and specific measures to counter the theme-park effect that is noticeable in historic cities with large numbers of visitors.
