In Brussels, “initial positions have been adopted in a power struggle that will probably last until the end of the summer”, writes Trouw, following the informal European Council meeting in the course of which leaders of the EU28 were expected to take stock of the European election results and begin discussions on nominations to key EU posts.
Notwithstanding the European parliamentary groups' call for the Council to approve the candidate whose party won the most votes to the presidency of the Commission — a demand that should pave the way for the appointment of EPP leader Jean-Claude Juncker — national government leaders have tasked European Council President Herman Van Rompuy to explore “who could fill top EU posts and gather a majority in the European Parliament”, points out EUobserver. The news website adds that consultations are "set to last at least until the end of June.”
