Government formation in Germany: Bad design

Talks between acting chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats, the Greens and the Liberals (FDP) on forming the new government coalition in Germany — nicknamed "Jamaica" after the colours of the parties involved in the discussion — collapsed on 19 November, after the FDP pulled back from the negotiating table. Immigration and the energetic transition were the main disagreement points.

The country's president, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, will now have to decide wether he will ask Merkel to run a minority government or to start talks with the opposition Social-democrats, or if he will call for a new election.
