After three years of grueling talks, on September 23 the EU and Ukraine concluded negotiations on their association agreement. “It is a huge success... Kiev has chosen the West”, remarks Rzeczpospolita, stressing that “for a long time it was thought that Ukraine’s pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych did not really want integration with the EU”. There were also rumours that Moscow had pledged to sell Kiev its gas at preferential prices if it rejected the offer of closer commercial and political ties with Europe. TheUE-Ukraine association agreement which is to be signed by the end of the year, most probably at the next EU-Ukraine summit in December, provides for the establishment of a free trade area (DCFTA). Under the terms of the agreement, Kiev will adopt acquis communautaire and reform its political institutions to ensure compliance with European standards.
