Drago Jančar was born in Maribor in 1948 and is considered Slovenia’s most important contemporary author. His novels and essays have been translated into many languages, and his plays have been widely staged. Jančar has won numerous awards for his work, including the Jean Améry Prize for European Essay Writing (2007) and the European Prize for Literature (2012). Most recently he was awarded the Austrian State Prize for European Literature (2020).
