The European Commission launched a legal case against the UK on May 30, claiming the government is refusing to pay social security benefits to tens of thousands of non-British EU nationals – including Romanians and Bulgarians – living in the UK.
The move comes after two years of unsuccessful negotiations between the Commission and Prime Minister David Cameron’s government over payment of unemployment and welfare benefits, and was branded a “land grab” by the Conservative Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith.
