Notwithstanding predictions announced by many commentators, expert opinion has it that anti-European parties are unlikely to achieve a major breakthrough in in European elections next May. However, this will do little to mitigate Europeans" disaffection with a parliament that they perceive as remote from their concerns. 
Paris and Berlin may be celebrating the anniversary of the Elysée Treaty, which founded their reconciliation, but their marriage has hit the rocks. The French are making faces at the economic success of the Germans, who aren’t holding back when it comes to pointing out the weaknesses of their neighbours. But we have to keep the love alive. 
How do you reconcile the democratic expression of Europeans with decision-making in Brussels? While referendums on treaties have become too risky, a functioning tool for this purpose has been around for a few months: bring on the petition. 
Ever since his election, François Hollande has hardly mentioned Europe. Embarrassed by left-wing bickering over the ratification of the fiscal compact, France’s new president also knows that voters tend to turn against the EU in times of crisis. A Le Monde columnist warns that he will nevertheless have to consult the French people on the subject one day.
