Briefing: Croatia, the 28th member


Eighteen years after the end of the war in the former Yugoslavia, Croatia will join the European Union on July 1. A symbolic achievement for the region and good news for Europe, which still needs to demonstrate its attractiveness. But the negotiations have been long and drawn out, amid a backdrop of crisis for the EU and an incomplete transition for the Croatian state. For Croats, just as for the rest of the people of Europe, the period ahead will be full of hope, yet also volatile.
