On 22 September, the Germans go to the polls to reelect their Parliament. Due to Germany's role in Europe, and because of the political weight that it wields within the European Union (in addition to its traditional economic clout), this ballot is sometimes called "the first round of the European elections," which are themselves scheduled for next May.
Using the German press and also the international media, we will try and provide a rundown on the key issues - both national and European - of the campaign, gauging the feelings of the German people, and among other things, how they see their role in Europe, to allow us a better understanding of the country which Europeans discuss almost every day, despite not really knowing what makes it tick.
