Briefing: VoxEurop | Blocking protected areas in the Mediterranean

Hello, and welcome to VoxEurop newsletter.

Preserving reasonable employment levels in the fishing sector today, or fostering environmental sustainability in the long run? This is the dilemma the Italian government is facing, as it just vetoed the establishment of the largest protected reserve in the Mediterranean sea, Stefano Valentino reports in his in-depth data-driven investigation.

The yet-not-installed new European Commission has put the environment on top of its agenda, with the "European Green New Deal" it committed to. But how close is it to the "Green New Deal" brought on by US congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, which has a pretty strong social justice component? Without the latter, the European version will not fit its purposes, says academic Eloi Laurent.

We're also happy to present our first podcast experience, as we started collaborating on a series of shows focused on civil society and democracy. You will luckily not hear our voices this week, but that of Wojciech Przybilski, from Visegrad Insight, on…the Visegrád Four problem with the rule of law. Speaking of which, there is a tiny glimmer of hope that the situation is improving, notes Wojciech in another paper.
