Briefing: The citizen initiative – A democratic fiasco?

VoxEurop

Hello, and welcome to VoxEurop newsletter.

The European Citizens’ Initiative is a tool that aims at fostering participatory democracy within EU institutions. To do so, it allows citizens to launch a proposal for a legislative change at the European level. But, as NGO The Good Lobby founder Alberto Alemanno notes in the podcast we present here, “the ECI is not citizens friendly as it should be, and it has also been dissuading many citizens and NGOs from using it”.

Whereas OBC Transeuropa scrutinizes the composition of the new European commission, Alternatives Economiques highlights the inefficiencies of the European carbon market, and Emanuela Barbiroglio makes sense of the numbers on unauthorized migration to Europe.
