The trial of Ratko Mladic opened on May 16 before the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia. Nicknamed "the Butcher of the Balkans", the former commander of the Bosnian Serbs, 70, must answer charges of war crimes and genocide during the civil war of 1992-95. In particular he is charged with leading the siege of Sarajevo (10,000 deaths) and the Srebrenica massacre (8,000 dead).
