Barack Obama, the candidate for the White House favoured by most Europeans, was re-elected president, with 50.3% of the popular vote and the backing of 303 members of the electoral college. He defeated his Republican adversary, Mitt Romney, who scored 48.1% of the vote and obtained support from 206 electoral college members.
