Former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, now once again a candidate to take over this post despite retiring from politics a year ago, took part in the European People's Party summit on December 13.

The group of officials, which includes the conservative parties and European Christian Democrats, widely criticised Berlusconi in recent days, for letting Mario Monti fall and risk creating a new crisis in Europe.
