On March 5, the executive board of the Deutsche Bahn decided to continue with the controversial construction of the new station in Stuttgart, despite its projected cost now rising to €6.5bn, compared to an initial quote of €2.45bn when the project was first floated in 1995.

Called S21, the underground railway project has triggered several demonstrations, becoming one of the symbols of the new protest movement in Germany. The opening, originally scheduled for 2020, is now set for 2022.
