In a Europe marked by mass unemployment and deindustrialisation, the traditional May 1 Labour Day parades achieved mixed success.

Demonstrations against austerity were more pronounced in Spain than in Greece, where a transport strike was organised. Unions mobilised only limited support in France, but several thousand people took to the streets in Berlin.
