The European Union celebrates Europe Day on May 9, marking the anniversary of the 1950 Schuman Declaration, considered the founding text of the Union.

Some 63 years later, Europe finds itself amid its worst political, economic and institutional crisis as it struggles to find "a reforming father figure" to give it new impetus.
