UK trades unions announced they planned to hold a series of strikes starting on October 23 in protest at Prime Minister David Cameron’s plans to privatise the 497-year-old state postal service, the Royal Mail. The plans were announced earlier in the year by Business Secretary Vince Cable.

At the same time, Chancellor George Osborne denied claims that the UK housing market is inflated after new figures showed that house prices are now close to the record high hit in January 2008.
