The number of migrants in the Lampedusa reception centre passed the one thousand mark on October 14 - despite being designed to accommodate only 250 - after ship carrying 150 Syrian refugees arrived on the Italian island. Another boat with 152 mostly Somali, Eritrean and Syrian migrants landed at Pozzallo, in southern Sicily.

This came on the same day that Italy launched the "Safe Sea" naval operation designed to intercept migrant ships before they arrive in the EU's territorial waters.
