Union of fear

Published on 9 December 2011 at 14:37

For the first time since the start of the debt crisis, Greece has not been at the centre of discussions at the European Council. But with the reform of the treaties adopted in principle on the night of December 8 to 9, “Greece is under threat of being directly excluded from the new form Europe is taking,” writes To Vima. “It will be the first victim, but others will follow.” “The summit has revealed two things,” writes the newspaper:

“One, a flagrant institutional vagueness. In fact, the member states have been ordered to implement major reforms. One sees that Europe is radically changing the look of sanctions and how they’re issued. The second point is the birth of fear. For the first time in half a century, the European space is no longer one of hope, but one of fear and worry for all its member states.”
