Germany has become the world's third-largest arms exporter with 11% of the world market, behind the US (30%) and Russia (23%), reports Frankfurter Rundschau. According to a March 15 report published by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPIRI), German arms exports have nearly doubled since 2000, with growth fuelled by sales of the Dingo armoured vehicle, the Leopard tank, BO-105 helicopter, and Type-204 submarine. "We're not proud that Germany has joined the ranks of wholesalers in the arms business," runs the German daily’s leader. "While most of the buyers are stable democracies, the supply of submarines to longstanding rivals Turkey and Greece - two key customers - is not exactly an act of détente."
