Leading with the headline "King Umberto," L’Espresso reports on the success of Umberto Bossi's Northern League in regional elections on 29 March. In the wake of key victories in the regions of Piedmont and Veneto, the party is almost on a par with government leader Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PdL) in Northern Italy: and Bossi and his colleagues are now in a position of strength. The weekly notes that Bossi has announced that he wants to be the next mayor of Milan, while the new governor of Veneto, Luca Zaia, has demanded the immediate granting of an autonomous status, which would establish an independent "Catalonian or Bavarian style" administration in Northern Italy. At the same time, members of the Northern League also plan to prevent the distribution of the RU-486 abortion pill, which has recently been made available in Italian hospitals. According to La Repubblica, the initiative is a sop to the Catholic Church, which made it one of the conditions for its support for the League in the regional elections.
