In the wake of a referendum in which workers at Fiat's Pomigliano d’Arco factory accepted the offer of greater flexibility in exchange for the continued operation of the plant and the relocalisation to Italy of some production lines currently manufactured in Poland, l'Unità alludes to the title of Vittorio De Sica's famous film in its comment on the long-term consequences of what could be a watershed in the history of Italian industrial relations. In particular, the left-wing daily wonders if "the Pomigliano model will now be applied at other factories in the county." The changes at the production facility close to Naples "represent a first stage in Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne's programme," which l'Unità notes "involves a radical rethink of work practices and industrial relations."
