The entirefront page of SMEis devoted to a single story: on 30 August in Bratislava, “a gunman shot seven of his neighbours before committing suicide.” According to the daily, the man, a former soldier, who shot “at everything that moved,” also wounded 15 people. Six of the victims were all from the same Roma family. Although police have yet to confirm the motive for the murders, relatives of the victims are convinced that they were racially motivated. “How can we restore confidence in our security, for the Roms and also for all of the residents in the city?” wonders the daily.
