The flagship project the "Land of Baden-Württemberg", the Stuttgart 21 train station, is expected to cost up to €11bn – much higher than the €2.45bn initially detailed when the project began in 1995.
This controversial underground station plan may now be abandoned. The Federal government is balking at the cost overruns and is considering withdrawing from the project, which Angela Merkel has championed. This would be seen as a failure for the Chancellor – ahead of legislative elections scheduled for September.
