Up the Republic?

Lisbon daily i reports that on the 100th anniversary of the 5 October Revolution,President Aníbal Cavaco Silva is expected to launch an appeal "for a patriotic union to save the republic." Portugal’s current problems – a worrying level of sovereign debt and a large public spending deficit — are not very different to those that marked the first years of the republic: a fact that leads political analyst Costa Pinto to wonder if “the gods are seeking revenge” for the fall of the monarchy in 1910.
