In the final results of March 12 general elections in Greenland, the social-democratic party Siumut won 42.8 per cent of the vote, while the ruling socialist party, Inuit Ataqatigiit, scored only 34.4 per cent. The turnout for the vote was 74.2 per cent.
If Siumut succeeds in forming a coalition, Greenland will be led by its first ever woman prime minister, 47-year-old party leader Aleqa Hammond.
The question of the extraction of natural resources was a key issue in the election campaign, notes the daily’s website: “Ms Hammond went to the polls campaigning on demands for royalties for extracting and exporting minerals from Greenland. She believes that Greenland must have money from the first day that foreign companies begin to exploit the resources in the ground.”
