The British tabloid leads with the same headline as its German counterpart Bild to announce the election of Argentinian Jorge Mario Bergoglio to the papacy.
However, the expression has a particular nuance in the United Kingdom, highlighted by the photo of footballer Diego Maradona. In a 1986 World Cup match against England, the Argentian captain used his hand to knock the ball into the goal out of the sight of the referee. He later said the goal was the result of “the hand of God”.
Four years after the Falklands war, controversy over the goal and England’s elimination from the competition reignited tensions between the UK and Argentina, which still persist today.
