‘Brussels fears for political cohesion following Constitutional Court’s decision’

The Constitutional Court’s decision on the legality of salary and pension cuts included in the 2013 budget will be announced within a few days.

President Aníbal Cavaco Silva sent the 2013 budget to the Court after doubts over the constitutionality of three of its elements. Brussels is hoping the Court’s intervention with help maintain social and political cohesion.

“The concerns of the European Commission are legitimate. There is a real threat of social and political fragmentation in the country. Brussels knows the extent of the problem – and the risks," writes the daily.
