Part of the East-Side Gallery, the most complete block of remains of the Berlin Wall, decorated by artists from the world over, was destroyed at dawn on March 27 by property developer Maik Uwe Hinkel.
Ignoring recent protests by several thousand demonstrators and on-going negotiations with Berlin's city hall, the developer took advantage of a legal loophole to start work on the construction of a 15-story luxury apartment complex on the banks of the Spree.
Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit, says he is seeking a solution to the problem.
