“Muslims are targets for hatred,” headlinesTageszeitung. According to a survey published 13 October by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, 58.4% of Germans want to restrict the practice of Islam in their country. The daily argues that “talk, talk and more talk” is not the right strategy to counter xenophobic attitudes, which should be addressed by political initiatives. Hostility to Muslims “feeds on a sentiment of political disenfranchisement” and is also a consequence “of the material deprivation that many people endure on a daily basis.” For Tageszeitung, greater social participation, a minimum income scheme, and more direct democracy should form part of an overall solution to the problem.
