The death of four Alpini troops in the Afghan province of Farah on 9 October has reignited debate on Italy’s participation in the Nato-led intervention there. Left-leaningL'Espresso has attacked official insistence on the "pacifist" nature of the Italian mission, and revealed that the country is engaged in a "secret war" in which "the Italian military have killed hundreds of fighters". The magazine has obtained new documents via theWikiLeaks website, which describe "an endless series of incidents, including air raids on villages. It is a mission characterised by the presence of traitors and double agents, with Afghan Nato-trained troops helping the Taliban, and major doubts about the Kabul government’s use of the hundreds of millions of euros in aid that has been donated for the reconstruction of the country by European member states including Italy."
