“Under a cloudless sky, at least in Paris, France took to the streets to show the scale of division over the controversial plan” to introduce same-sex marriage, reports the newspaper, in the wake of further marches to protest against the new legislation. Police reported some 45,000 people took part, while organisers said the figure was around 270,000.
The law is expected to be finally adopted by the French parliament on April 23. Opponents of the measure are keeping up the pressure, while any concession on the part of the French government, “will be interpreted by its supporters and the opposition as a further sign of weakness,” notes the Catholic daily.
“A solution may be found when the Constitutional Council undertakes its all-important examination of the text,” remarks the newspaper.
