Right-wing President Traian Băsescu announced on June 11 that he will launch a procedure for a referendum on constitutional reform, which will focus on the same questions as those already posed by a previous popular vote in November 2009.
The reform aims to introduce a unicameral parliament with a reduced number of MPs.
According to România liberă, the president’s initiative has been prompted by the fact that the current parliamentary commission for constitutional reform has not taken into account changes proposed by the 2009 referendum, which were backed by 80 per cent of the vote.
The Bucharest daily likens, Băsescu’s decision to throwing a “bomb at the parliament”, which is ruled by the centre-left Social Liberal Union, hostile to the president.
