The German Chancellor will not take part in the July 1 ceremony in Zagreb to celebrate Croatia’s accession to the EU, reports Justarnji list.
The reason for her non-attendance, which has not been officially announced, but which has been cited in the German and Croatian press, is a dispute between the two countries over Josip Perković, a former chief of the Yugoslav State Security Administration (UDBA).
On June 25, Germany issued an arrest warrant for Perković, who is suspected of organising the assassination of an opponent of the communist regime, Stjepan Đureković, in Bavaria in 1983. Zagreb remains opposed to the extradition of Perković.
