On the day when Croatia joins the EU against a backdrop of economic crisis, Novi list points out that “Europe is not just about the price of a bag of potatoes” —

No one has ever succeeded in giving anyone the gift of well-being. All we want is to be able to earn a decent living from our work. In Croatia, some people are longstanding supporters of Europe, some will take time to come around to the idea, and some others will never do so. Europe is not like a tight suit that we have suddenly decided to wear. It is part of every individual’s culture, and one that does not sit well with some people. Yes, we should see Europe as a matter of reason, spirit, education and training, before focusing on its impact on our wallets.
The Rijeka based daily also takes advantage of the event to remind its readers that the city, which is Croatia’s third largest, is a candidate to become European Capital of Culture in 2020.
