British Wimbledon tennis champion Andy Murray refused to be drawn into whether he backs Scottish independence, but pledged to announce his stance ahead of the referendum in September 2014.

The 26-year-old Scot, who on July 7 became the first Briton in 77 years to lift the men's singles trophy, said he would research the matter and “see what is best for the country”.

The UK newspapers celebrated the British victory, although a Herald editorial made reference to the rivalry between the Scots and English, writing of the fact that “it took a while for some tennis fans, particularly English tennis fans, to learn to love him.”
