The Bucharest Public University of Medicine and Pharmacy recorded particularly intense competition for admission this year, reports Romanian daily România Liberă, with 10 candidates for every opening in stomatology and five for a spot in general medicine.
The paper explains that –
the considerable craze for medical courses and the willingness to sit such a difficult examinations (...) can seem paradoxical if you consider the salary of a doctor in Romania is around [€300-400 per month]. But Romanian medical schools prepare graduates for the EU – the United Kingdom, France and the Nordic countries.

Since the country entered the EU in 2007, 14,000 medial specialists have emigrated, while the state spends €3.5bn per year to train them, the paper notes.
