Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is to respond to questions from parliament about the Bárcenas affair on August 1. In particular, Rajoy is expected to address allegations of Luis Bárcenas, the former treasurer of the People’s Party, that he and other high-profile figures in the party received irregular bonuses over a period of years.

The prime minister’s appearance before MPs is the subject of “high expectations” for the general public, notes La Gaceta, which argues that Rajoy has been given —

… a golden opportunity to silence rumours, provide proof, and convince everyone that he is innocent as he claims.

At the start of his appearance in the morning, Rajoy insisted that “there were no secret crimes or parallel accounts [held by the PP]” and that he “has always declared all of [his] income”.
