Svenska Dagbladet has begun publication of a series of articles on the “lost generation” of jobless young people in southern Europe. Along with the much reported cases of Spain and Greece, the western Balkans is also at “the heart of the youth unemployment crisis,” writes the newspaper

… in Kosovo, more than 70 per cent of young people are unemployed. In Croatia, more than half have no work.

For columnist Therese Larsson Hultin

Behind these figures, there are people. And a rich society that is not able to bring young people into the workplace automatically becomes poor. […] Much praised apprenticeships and training programmes are not enough: European companies will have to have the courage to begin recruiting. […] And young Europeans will have to be ready to take the initiative.
