The UK population has bucked a European trend with the number of births soaring to 813,200 last year, the largest baby boom in the country since 1972.
The population grew by 419,000 in the year ending June 30, 2012, the largest population growth in Europe, according to new data from the UK’s Office for National Statistics.
The increased birth rate was believed to be due to an increase in the use of fertility drugs among older women and the high birth rate among immigrant households, with more than 60 per cent of an increase between 2001 and 2007 due to foreign-born women.
There are now 63.7 million people living in the UK, making it the third largest nation in the EU after Germany and France.
