The Secretary of State for European and International Affairs, Reinhold Lopatka of the conservative (ÖVP), has demanded that ”Brussels handover certain powers to national authorities,” reports Die Presse.
In an interview with the daily, the minister explains that ”in certain fields like social and employment policy, European collaboration simply makes no sense [...] when you take into account the various levels of income.”
Lopatka “has joined a chorus of European leaders, who, in recent weeks, have touted the idea of repatriating certain EU powers,” notes the newspaper, which points out that his intervention will add to calls from conservatives such as British Prime Minister David Cameron, “German Chancellor Angela Merkel [and] Dutch Premier Mark Rutte.”
