Several hundred thousand people took part in the Catalan Way, a human chain extending over 400km along the region’s borders on September 11, in celebration of Catalonia's national day.
Participants in the demonstration “demanded that the [regional] government led by Artur Mas organise a referendum" on Catalan independence in 2014, reports El Periódico.
For the Catalan daily, the event organised by pro-independence groups was —
… a show of civic determination, which benefits from majority support, but has yet to be accorded legal guarantees… [which must be provided] by an agreement […] with the state.
