With less than two weeks to go before general elections on October 25 and 26, the leader of the the Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) Bohuslav Sobotka has announced that he will be the next Czech prime minister.

The polls are predicting a major victory for the social democrats, but the party leadership is very divided, explains Lidové noviny.

The President of the Czech Republic and former leader of the party, Miloš Zeman, has declared that he will take into account the preferences of voters, who can choose a candidate from a list, when appointing the future head of government. He has indicated his preference for Michal Hašek, the party vice president, who is also the candidate most favoured by the polls.
