Catalonian regional president Artur Mas announced the territory will hold a referendum on independence on November 9, 2014, in defiance of the Spanish central government.
The announcement drew a hostile reaction from PM Mariano Rajoy who branded the decision illegal, notes La Vanguardia.
The referendum will come just two months after a Scottish independence poll, and will see voters asked: “Do you want a Catalan state?”, with those who reply yes, then asked: “Do you want that state to be independent,” explains the Barcelona daily. The newspaper continues
Catalonia’s status as a state does not imply secession. We know the case of the Free State of Bavaria in the German Federal Republic. Another issue is the second question concerning independence, because it is difficult to reconcile how it would fit within the 1978 [Spanish] Constitution.
