Aníbal "Cavaco Silva re-elected with record abstentionism", headlines Público after the presidential election of January 23 saw a turnout of 46.6 percent, the lowest in the history of Portuguese democracy. Silva won with 52.94% of votes, but with fewer than half a million votes than on his previous election. For the Lisbon daily this is nevertheless "a clear victory in a troubled country", noting that in the midst of economic crisis the victor must "preserve internal stability given the need to meet the deficit targets and to continue to borrow money abroad".
