“Poles are the largest group forced to work for a song in the UK,” headlines Gazeta Wyborcza citing a report by the British National Crime Agency (NCA). In 2013, the NCA identified 2,744 “potential victims of human trafficking” (a 22 per cent rise compared to 2012).
Over 40 per cent of them ended up in the sex trade, and nearly 30 per cent were forced into manual labour. The report singles out Romania and Poland as countries of origin for most victims in the first and second groups, respectively. The daily stresses that British MPs are already drafting a bill that will introduce harsher punishments for modern slavery.
