"Angela Merkel is the most powerful woman in the world,” headlines the Bildzeitung with a shot of the smiling Power Frau, who “was of course delighted”. This is the fourth time running that the chancellor of the world’s fourth biggest economy has been thus crowned by Forbes magazine. The Tageszeitung, for its part, notes the remarkable rightward swing in Merkel’s campaign in the runup to the general elections on 27 September: Christian-Democrat traditions are now mainstays on the stump for a woman who “owes her ascent to the break with her mentor, Helmut Kohl, and with the main principles of the CDU”.
