Afghanistan Sinking

Now that his main opponent Abdullah Abdullah has withdrawn from a planned run-off in the second round of the Afghan elections, President Hamid Karzai has been officially re-elected, with ringing endorsement from Western leaders, including British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, despite reports of widespread ballot-rigging in the first round.
