Danas ("Today") was founded in June 1997 in response to a press clampdown by the then president, Slobodan Milosevic, which earned it a number of run-ins with the regime. Left leaning, Danas has become the independent daily of record in Serbia, focusing on topics related to the former Yugoslavia, European integration, social democracy and the protection of human rights and minorities.
